∞ The iconic Palais Theatre was completed in 1927 and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. The Palais Theatre is a concert venue and theatre located in the Melbourne inner suburb of St Kilda with a capacity of 2,896 people, it is the largest seated theatre in Australia.
The former cinema, which retains many of its original features, is considered one of the finest examples of Art deco architecture in the country and one of Melbourne’s most iconic and best-loved entertainment venues.
Nuvo Group was selected by Built Pty Ltd to work in the $20 million upgrade project of the Palais Theatre. The restoration of the 90-year-old St Kilda venue would protect the life and legacy of the site and secure the long-term future of the Palais Theatre as a live performance venue. Its refurbishment was a joint project between the Victorian Government and the City of Port Phillip.

The project, was carried out in consultation with Heritage Victoria and aimed to fix critical issues, including upgrading the building’s electrical and fire protection systems to modern standards, structural stabilisation inside the theatre, upgrades to various hydraulic systems and repairs to its magnificent exterior, including upgrading the façade and external illuminated signage. The repair and refurbishment works addressed the building’s critical maintenance and refurbishment issues boosting building safety.
Nuvo was involved in the whole project lifecycle, from design to project management, carrying out a thorough audit of the building, producing reports and drawings, and detailing the work required to future proof the building and bring it up to a compliant standard. Additionally, a risk management strategy was implemented including a critical works plan (CWP) methodology. This allowed to capture all potential risk factors and plan contingencies in advance. Nuvo engaged with all stakeholders including the client to develop a highly detailed methodology to confidently predict and control project delivery.
The engineering team provided a safety management program across the construction site, providing safe conditions for the public, stakeholders and service groups. Nuvo collaboratively developed strategies to ensure all electrical works were delivered in a manner that safeguarded theatres’ operations and business continuity.
This resulted in cost savings for the customer; meeting project objectives in a cost-effective way and getting and outcome that performs into the future.
